about

'Red Hat' was written in 2020 and has continued to take a shape since then. I imagine it will continue to change as I sing it. For example the bridge came in 2022. Pieces will fall away, and pieces will take part.
--
She began writing this song as a container for a breakup story. Now when she sings it she finds that it holds more than a breakup story. It holds longings for trust in the pace of her life, ever-change. And within herself and who she choose to be with.

With this re-telling of ache and fever, and more so with the release of this song she is making space for where she is and who she is now, in her love story.

We recorded this demo at an artist-run studio in Atlanta, Georgia in August 2022.

This track contains voice memos of the song from Mary's phone while she practiced singing and playing it at home and some field recordings. All dazzled and weaved together by Graham's magic.

lyrics

Lyrics:

He was a coward.
Waiting all alone
On a stool,
at the end of the bar.

I wandered over to his shoulder
whispered in,
“Hey You”

When the red hat
entered the train
I wondered
When the red hat
entered the train
I wondered

It was a thursday morning
around spring,
gotten the news that you
[had fled your scene.]
And after work that day
I traveled up the street.
[Somethin told me you had gone.]
And after work that day
I traveled up the street.
“Hey You”

When the red hat
entered the train
I wondered
When the red hat
entered the train
I wondered

Why do you wanna lie to me?
I just wanna be your everything.
I just wanna be yours, i
Why do you wanna lie to me?
I just wanna be your everything.
I just wanna be yours, i

That's not possible no more,
You walked out that front door.
Time and time, time again
That's not possible no more,
You walked out that front door.
Time and time, time again

He was a coward.
Waiting all alone
Was he the coward all along?
On a stool
at the end of the bar.

I wandered over to his shoulder
whispered in,
“Hey You”
